It's super easy xero. All a mask does is transfer it's opacity information to the layer it's used on. It is easiest if you think of it in terms of a graphics program like psp or photoshop.

For instance. You create one layer of text, everything around the text is transparent. Above that you create a layer of polka-dots. If you were to use the layer of text as a mask, you would create a layer of polkadots with the same transparent areas as the text layer, effectively creating polkadotted text.

It's useful because in UF, you are limited with how you can define transparency. The transparency of a layer is still tied directly into the function of that layers' formula. If we were to use the polka dot example; There would be no way in UF to define a transparent area on the polka dot layer that matched the text layer perfectly. So we have to use the text layers' opacity information instead.

Pretty bizarre aside, I was up until 3:30am working on my masking tutorial last night... weird.
